About Us

Founded in 2021, Proteus Space was established to capitalize on a rapidly evolving space landscape driven by declining launch costs, a burgeoning space economy, and the urgent need to deliver resilient orbital capabilities to defend our national interests.

We combine serious space flight experience with an open minded, first-principles, mission sense of urgency approach, leveraging advanced computational engineering to deliver payload and mission optimized satellite solutions with industry leading speed, precision, and reliability.

Mythology

The standard satellite bus is aerospace's attempt at automotive platform sharing, but the analogy breaks down because, unlike a car's human passenger, orbital payloads are never a constant.

They're rapidly evolving technologies with wet-ink interfaces and unforgiving SWaP-C constraints, and forcing them into a rigid standard bus is a "Procrustean Bed".

Like the Greek bandit who stretched or amputated travelers to fit his iron bed, the standard bus mangles mission performance to meet a pre-set interface, adding months of delay and ballooning engineering costs.

Our answer is named for Procrustes' mythological opposite: Proteus, the shape-shifting Greek sea god who could adapt his form at will.

Proteus flips the equation: a patent-pending, AI-enabled engineering platform that shapes the bus to the payload. We produce thousands of manufacturable, payload-tailored architectures in minutes, complete with automated structural analysis, digital twins, and Hardware-in-the-Loop validation.

With TRL 9 flight heritage on orbit with AFRL and trusted by NASA, MDA, Large Primes and Space Force, Proteus compresses timelines from years to months, delivering end-to-end mission support from tailored bus design through launch and operations.

Manifesto

We stand on the shoulders of giants, in awe of the space industry’s remarkable achievements pioneering exploration, enabling global communications and navigation, and ensuring national security, among many other contributions to the human race.

Their groundbreaking efforts laid the foundation for today’s orbital ambitions.

That said, the 265 year old industrial systems design optimization approach, build hardware first, is obsolete.

Its linear nature is focused on iterating design capability once hardware has been built - an incredibly slow and expensive proposition - and has been the reason only billionaires, unicorn VC funded startups, large public companies and governments can commit to serious, complex industrial hardware programs.

This hardware first approach, along with humans drafting in CAD, directly informed the invention of standard buses in the 1970s - an inflexible, function follows form architecture still in use today by many companies big and small.

This rigid and inflexible product design strategy is no longer sufficient to meet the rapidly accelerating space demands of this century or the next.

Launch cadence and availability has already overcome the spacecraft mass available for orbit, and it's getting worse every day.
